Listing Down Your Weaknesses

Let me start this article by saying that talking about your weaknesses in a job interview should not be feared or avoided. Hiring managers want to know your weak points for very good reasons. It should be clear to you that this question is not meant to emphasize your shortcomings. See this as an opportunity to show your hiring manager that you are honest and transparent about the areas that you are not good at.

As you prepare for your job interview, try listing down your weaknesses. It is highly likely that you will be asked to talk about them. Go ahead and write the things that you are not good at or the things you wish you were better at. After you have come up with a list of your weakness, ask yourself a few questions. Are these weaknesses going to affect my chances if I talk about them? Are these weak points going to impact my performance in a negative way? Will it be difficult for me to address these weaknesses? If you answered yes to all these questions, then it is best not to mention them during your interview.

If you know that having these weaknesses  will not negatively affect your chances at the job, then feel free to mention them. Be honest about the skills that you lack but are willing to improve. You can also talk about your neutral weaknesses. These are your weak points that are not exactly specific or connected to the job opportunity.

It is important to convince the hiring manager that you can be honest about your shortcomings. Aside from giving them the impression that you are truthful, it will also imply to them that you are trustworthy. They will know that you are a humble person who has no problems owning up to mistakes. Your hiring manager will most likely think that you are the type of employee who uses sees negative experiences as learning opportunities. You will appear to be a person who has the motivation and dedication to work hard for the team and for the company.

Being able to handle this question with composure will also show the hiring manager that you are not easily rattled when faced with tricky question. Many candidates are confident in talking about their strengths but they tend to become flustered when they are asked to mention their weaknesses. This is because they think that being honest about their shortcomings will hurt their chances. It’s not always true. This is exactly why you should know which weak points you should mention in your interview. You don’t have to lie. You just need to distinguish what the best answer is.
